About Il Baciarino

Agriturismo Il Baciarino in Maremma, Tuscany is a place to relax in contact with nature. Our seven cottages are located on an 8 hectare olive and oak grove that overlooks the gentle hills and wild vegetation of the ‘macchia Mediterranea’.  From each of our cottages you can see all the way to the Tyrrhenian Sea in the distance. At night, the Milky Way is visible, a strip of stars stretching overhead. From our doorstep, you can take a trip along Roman roads, visit Etruscan archeological sites, and savour the daily life of a small Italian village.

The Baciarino Family

Andrea and Chandra are your hosts. Andrea was a fisherman and was raised here in Castiglione della Pescaia. He comes from a long line of fishers and looks forward to the days when he can return to fishing regularly. Until then, he expresses his love of the sea through his cooking, offering guests an opportunity to savour all the best that the sea has to offer. Chandra, Andrea’s wife, is an artist and hails from Canada. She has set up her studios here and is happily making ceramics and jewellery and books and other such wonders (available in the shop) to share with you!  Together they love sharing their lives with the rest of the Baciarino Family!

Rita is our aging mother-in-law, and the reigning queen of Il Baciarino. Sina is our genius handy man, and comes from Iran. And often there are people from around the world who come to do a ‘work-away’ with us (labour in exchange for room and board).

Sharing this little piece of paradise, you’ll find a dozen or so chickens, a rooster (George), 4 cats (La Grigia, Mama, Cuoricino, and Mouse), and 2 donkeys (Stella and Rodrigo).  There are also lizards and geckos, turtles and toads, fireflies and honey bees, wild boar and deer. It’s part of the delight of staying at an active agriturismo in the Maremman mountains!

We look forward to getting to know you too!

We are Looking for Volunteers to Join our Baciarino Family!

In 2024, we have some openings for volunteers. Join us as part of the family and help us make Il Baciarino even better. Your job will be to make the guest experience as positive as possible and help us prepare the cottages for the guests. In exchange you will have a place to sleep and all the food you can eat (and believe me, you’ll eat more than you ever thought possible!!). To make for the best experience, we ask for a minimum stay of a month. Email us to share why you’d like to become part of the family!

Vetulonia — Toscana

Il Baciarino is located on the edge of Vetulonia, a picturesque Etruscan hill town.  In town, the local bar - Il Ritrovo di Bes - serves not only a lovely afternoon aperitif, but also offers brioche in the morning.  It’s a great place to meet many of the inhabitants of Vetulonia. There’s also a tabaccheria and alimentari {grocery} store to keep you well stocked.  All within walking distance.

Vetulonia is one of the jewels of Etruscan history. Visit its museum, tombs, and ruins to get a deeper understanding of the long history of civilization in Italy.

Your starting point to Explore Tuscany

Although many of our guests come to relax and unwind, and therefore never leave the property, Il Baciarino’s position also makes it a strategic base to explore the region.  Castiglione della Pescaia is a mere 25 kilometres away and has many beautiful beaches, as does Punta Ala.  Some of the most beautiful medieval villages of Tuscany are also nearby: Massa Marittima, Pitigliano, San Gimignano.  You can explore the Tyrrhenian Sea shore starting in places like Castiglione della Pescaia and Monte Argentario.  And the Park of the Maremma is a fabulous seaside wildlife refuge.  Abbeys like San Galgano and many of the small Etruscan hill towns are great for history buffs who want to get off the beaten tourist track.

Within driving distance are Siena (65 km), Florence (160 km), Pisa (150 km) and Rome (180 km).

Our History - It’s a Love Story

In 2001, Andrea and his first wife, Clelia, fell in love with the rugged beauty of Vetulonia and bought a piece of land on which to build their dreams.  After years of hard work and challenges with Italian red tape, they welcomed their first guests to La Quercia in 2012 - the first of Il Baciarino’s cottages.  Over the next five years, they purchased many little adjacent parcels of land, and lovingly constructed four more little guest houses.

Clelia passed unexpectedly in 2017.  With the incredible help of friends and family, Andrea continued to share Baciarino with guests from all over the world.

In 2019, Andrea found love again and Chandra, his new wife, has joined him in dreaming about how to share this beautiful piece of the wild Tuscan landscape with you, our Baciarino family.

We hope you’ll fall in love with this place too!
